COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The ethics case involving South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Ken Ard is heading to state grand jury, giving the possibility for criminal charges.
Attorney General Alan Wilson announced Wednesday his team completed a review of information from the State Ethics Commission and says the case would best be handled by a grand jury. Wilson says that process will start immediately.
Ard spokeswoman Julia Foster says Ard would cooperate with authorities.
The investigation was launched into the Republican's use of campaign funds. He paid a $48,000 fine earlier in July and another $12,500 in June to cover investigation costs tied to 107 counts of using campaign cash for personal purposes.
Officials say he spent campaign cash on a vacation, clothes and iPads and provided inaccurate information to investigators.
Wilson says state law prohibits any discussion of the case while it is before a grand jury.
