COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- Dozens of volunteers worked to keep the state’s water ways cleaner. Monday, volunteers marked storm drains throughout Columbia’s Five Points with small signs reminding people that drains are not dumps.
Victoria Kramer, Stormwater Environmental Specialist with the City of Columbia, explains storm drains empty into rivers and creeks, not wastewater treatment plants.
“Drains are only for water anything that goes down storm drains can eventually make it into one of our waterways,” she said.
Volunteers from the Five Points Association, Keep the Midlands Beautiful, and the City of Columbia helped in the green effort.
Kramer added, “our three rivers our three rivers make it a great place to live in Columbia the Saluda the Broad and the Congaree Rivers everybody loves to fish and swim on them and anything that we can do to help keep them clean we are looking to support.”
They are hoping to expand the storm drain marking project. If you are interested in bringing storm drain marking to your neighborhood you can email stormwater@columbiasc.net.
