NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Civil rights leaders are holding a meeting in North Charleston to discuss South Carolina's new voter ID law.

The South Carolina NAACP is holding a news conference Monday afternoon before a town hall meeting at the Alfred Williams Community Center.

The civil rights group says officials and voting rights experts are expected on hand. Monday's meeting is the first in a series happening around the state.

South Carolina's history of discrimination against black voters means the photo identification law Republican Gov. Nikki Haley signed in June must get U.S. Justice Department approval. The initial public comment period for the new law runs through the end of August. The new policy has been called one of the nation's toughest voter identification laws.
