COLUMBIA (WACH) – The University of South Carolina baseball team is the undisputed best team in the nation after winning back-to-back College World Series titles. Now, the Gamecocks also have the nation's best player according to one publication.
USC junior pitcher Michael Roth was named National Player of the Year Thursday by CollegeBaseballInsider.com.
Fellow pitcher Matt Price is also included on the publication's All-America first team listing. Teammate pitcher John Taylor was named to the second team listing, and first baseman Christian Walker is on the honorable mention squad.
Roth went 14-3 with a 1.06 ERA during USC's 2011 national championship season.
Roth is already a first-team selection to Baseball America’s listing of the nation's best college players. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Roth to its second team. Roth was a third-team selection by Louisville Slugger.
The four Gamecocks named to these national lists of top players is tied for the most in the country. Only fellow College World Series teams Vanderbilt and Virginia have four players named.
What do you think about the selection of USC pitcher Michael Roth as national player of the year? Are you excited to see individual players honored or do the team's achievements matter more in your opinion?
