ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina State University has hired a Charleston attorney to advise its board of trustees.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports that the Orangeburg school's board voted Friday to hire D. Peters Wilborn Jr.

Last month, state auditors said mismanagement and a lack of planning were largely to blame for construction delays at South Carolina State's troubled transportation research center.

The Legislative Audit Council found no evidence of missing money but questioned spending and billing at the center named for U.S. Rep. James Clyburn. The report also noted the school doesn't have a viable plan to raise more than $80 million needed to complete the center.

Board chairman Jonathan Pinson said that, now that the school is past that audit, it was ready to hire a board attorney.
