COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The threat of triple digit heat looms over the Midlands Monday through Wednesday.
Because of the high temperatures, The National Weather Service has issued heat advisory for the Midlands, Pee Dee, and Lowcountry for Monday from Noon until 8 pm.
Many locations have flirted with triple digits in May and June, but this is the first time we may see three consecutive days with heat index values in the upper 100s. That means the temperature may be 100, but to your body it could feel like 108 degrees. Forecasters say heat index values of 105 are expected across the region and could go as high as 112 in some areas.
"I can't emphasize enough how dangerous heat can be," says SkyWACH Weather Anchor Justin Kier. "It seems like every year we tragically report the death of a child or beloved family pet that should have been prevented."
Heat is a leading weather killer and can strike both the young and old alike. Law enforcement constantly reminds parents not to leave children alone in cars. This is also a good time to check on the elderly as many do not have air-conditioning. Doctors also emphasize the importance of remaining hydrated. If you suffer a throbbing headache or stop sweating, those are extreme signs that your body is failing in the heat.
Don't forget about four legged friends in these tough times. Pets are more sensitive to heat then people. Time outdoors should be limited. They also require water, in a shaded area, and a cool place to rest. It's recommended that pets be left indoors with air-conditioning. Also, pets should never be left in cars during heatwaves.
