NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- After almost 150 years, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley is closer to giving up the secret of why it sank.
This week scientists will be able to see the entire hull of the submarine.
The hand-cranked sub went down off Charleston in 1864 after sending the Union blockade ship Housatonic to the bottom. It was buried in the sand tilted on its side. That's the way it was raised 11 years ago and has been oriented ever since.
Scientists expect to complete the work of righting the Hunley later this week.
That will give them a look at the entire hull for the first time and may show damage that could explain the sinking.
