LEXINGTON (WACH) - Internet dating is nothing new, each year millions of people look for love in cyber space; but the anonymity behind the keyboard gives those with bad intentions a chance to take advantage of someone looking for a relationship.
Lexington County Sheriff James Metts says Roger Lee was arrested for attacking a woman he met online, and he has a lengthy rap sheet.
"If you're meeting someone for the first time the sheriff's department suggests making sure the date is in a public setting and do a thorough background check on that person before you meet him or her."
Metts advises to never give out too much information on your profile.
"You've got to remember, once you release this information or you make comments or whatever, it's there. You can't retrieve it, you can't take it back."
The sheriff says the social media net gets wider and wider more people are using it to take out their aggressions.
"We’re seeing a lot of bullying by not only youth, but adults as well, especially in domestic dispute situations."
Metts says it's against the law to threaten someone online; but sometimes the best method to make the bullies go away is to simply ignore them.
