Attempted murder suspect surrenders to Newberry deputies

NEWBERRY (WACH) -- A man who was being sought for shooting his 5 month pregnant girl friend in the face surrendered himself at the Newberry County Detention Center early Wednesday morning.

Nigel Kendell Thomas turned himself in around 2:30 AM.  

Deputies say Thomas and his girlfriend, 21-year-old Alena Loretta Marbury, got into a fight Tuesday afternoonat the home they were living in on Bel Ivy Road, in Silverstreet.

According to investigators during the fight Thomas pulled out a small caliber handgun and shot her once in the face near her right cheek.

Investigators say that a family member drove Marbury to Newberry Hospital.

She was alert upon arrival to the hospital, and has since been airliftted to another hospital, but deputies have not said what hospital. 

A bond hearing for Thomas has not yet been scheduled.
