FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) -- The Army is seeking the toughest of the tough this week as six of its top order-barking drill sergeants face off at Fort Jackson.

Army spokesman Ray Harp says the four men and two women started the competition at 4 a.m. Monday. They will be judged on how they endure a punishing round of physical fitness tests and instructing soldiers on tasks like throwing grenades and running to cadence calls.

The candidates are from units across the country and all deployed to either Iraq or Afghanistan.

Two winners, one from active duty and one from the reserve ranks, will be announced Friday.

It is the first time the competition has been held at the Army's largest training installation located outside Columbia.
