ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) -- Some South Carolina officials expect the Atlanta area will be looking to the Savannah River basin soon to get drinking water.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reported about 100 water and wastewater plant operators met in Anderson on Thursday for a conference on water issues.

Edd Mize with the Oconee Joint Regional Sewer Authority expects water will be an issue in the years ahead.

Those at the session say they expect more interstate water disputes, damaged waterways, increased costs and economic development impact. Officials say there is no way to know how much water exists and existing drought plans don't consider the worst-case scenarios.

Anderson Rep. Don Bowen is pushing for a collaborative water policy for the state. He's hoping for passage of the bill next year.
