COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Officials say they arrested a robbery suspect Wednesday night who took money from the cash register at a Columbia gas station.

Columbia police say 51-year-old John Portlock was caught after an officer on patrol approached him because he matched the description of the man who robbed the Exxon gas station on Gervais Street.

During the arrest, police say Portlock fought back and then tried to eat some of the stolen cash as he was being taken into custody.

He is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.  He is charged with strong arm robbery, failure to stop for police and resisting arrest.
