COLUMBIA (WACH) -- City of Columbia officials held a ground breaking ceremony Monday morning for a new 532-car downtown parking garage.

The ceremony took place on site at the corner of Taylor and Sumter streets with Mayor Steve Benjamin on hand.

Benjamin says the new six-story project will house a built in bus shelter, bike racks and charging stations for electric vehicles, along with a shopping area to be leased on the first floor.

City officials say they've hired Contract Construction, a Columbia contractor, to build the facility which was designed by LS3P Architects.

The finishing touches are expected to be put on one year from now.

Will this new parking garage help the revitalization of the downtown area?  Leave a comment below with your thoughts.
