SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- A 55-year-old Spartanburg man has told police he stabbed a pit bull 20 times with a 2-inch pocket knife after the dog attacked him and his basset hound.
Capt. Randy Hardy says no charges have been filed and authorities are trying to contact the pit bull's owner.
The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported Wednesday that the man told police the pit bull jumped out of a fenced-in yard, knocked him down and grabbed his dog by the ear. The man pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the pit bull, fearing it would kill his dog.
The pit bull ran away and collapsed. Police said an animal control officer took the pit bull to the Spartanburg Humane Society, where it died.
