FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) -- The Army is dedicating a memorial garden at its chaplains' school at Fort Jackson to honor the 306 chaplains and chaplain assistants who have fallen in wartime service.

The ceremony Wednesday marks the opening of the garden located next to the Army Chaplain Center and School at the installation outside Columbia.

The memorial features a life-size bronze statue of an Army chaplain who is comforting a grief-stricken soldier.

Alongside is a wall of remembrance, which lists the names of the 294 chaplains and 12 chaplain assistants who perished in conflicts from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan and Iraq. A ring of flowering crepe myrtles and shrubs surrounds the area.
