COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Home sales and prices were down last month compared with a year ago, but last year's figures got a boost from a federal tax incentive for homebuyers.

The South Carolina Realtors Association released home sales figures Monday that showed an 18 percent decline from April 2010, which was the last month of the incentive program that let new homebuyers claim a credit on their income tax.

The median home price was down 3 percent from a year ago at $142,500.

For the first four months of 2011, home sales are about 8 percent less than they were for the same period last year. Homes are staying on the market 10 percent longer this year than last, but the inventory of properties for sale dropped 7 percent.
