COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH, AP) -- Richland County sheriff's deputies say they have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a man during a home invasion.
Sheriff Leon Lott said Monday that a fugitive task force found 28-year-old Darnell Khan and arrested him late last week in Columbia
Khan is charged with murder, burglary and attempted armed robbery.
Deputies say Khan forced his way into a home on Morningside Drive in January 2009 and ordered everyone inside not to move. Investigators say Khan shot James Willie Smith Jr. when he tried to leave.
In a release Sheriff Leon Lott said that the suspects went to this specific home to settle an ongoing dispute with several gang members.
At the time of the shooting Terris Green who lives next door says the neighborhood is normally quiet.
"When I heard gunshots, at first I thought I was dreaming," Green says the gunshots woke her up early Tuesday morning. Her bedroom window faces the home where deputies say Smith died.
