Elderly woman dies in car hit by train in Orangeburg

ORANGEBURG (WACH) -- Officials say an elderly woman is dead after her grandson tried to beat a train across the tracks in Orangeburg.

The grandson drove the around a stopped car at a crossing at the corner of Highway 601 and Sellers Avenue after 11 a.m. Friday according to Orangeburg Public Safety officials.

The 82-year-old woman, Susan Weatherford, was killed when the oncoming train collided with the Nissan sedan on the driver's side that was stuck on the tracks.  The grandson managed to escape.

Officials say Weatherford died at the scene after being ejected from the car.

Orangeburg Public Safety continues to investigate.  The name of the driver has not yet been released.
