COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A House panel has approved a bill that would stop a South Carolina town from catching speeding along Interstate 95 with a camera and mailing them a ticket.
The bill unanimously advanced Wednesday by a House Judiciary subcommittee would require an officer to stop a driver along the roadside and hand them a traffic ticket in person.
Ridgeland is using the speed cameras along a seven-mile stretch of I-95 in town limits.
Ridgeland Mayor Gary Hodges says he will fight for that camera system, which he says saves lives and prevents traffic accidents. The mayor says the system manned by a town police officer has issued roughly 10,000 tickets in nine months.
A federal judge dismissed some claims earlier this month in a lawsuit that challenged the traffic cameras.
