HONEA PATH, SC (WHNS) -- Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said the death of a toddler in Honea Path is a homicide.

The Honea Path Police Department said they charged Joshua Babb with homicide by child abuse in the death of 23-month-old Jayden Agnew.

Investigators said Babb and his girlfriend were babysitting Agnew.

Shore said about 9 p.m. Monday officers were called to the Shamrock Apartments.

When emergency workers arrived, they found a 23-month-old child injured, Shore said. He said Jayden was taken to AnMed Health and then transferred to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he died about 2 a.m. Tuesday during surgery.

Shore said Jayden was injured at the home, and died from blunt force trauma to his head.

Honea Path Police Chief David King said the people in the home, Jayden's baby sitter and her boyfriend, said the boy suffered injuries when he fell from a crib, but there are inconsistencies in their stories. He said investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy before drawing any conclusions.

The police chief said no other charges would be filed at this time.

Jayden's mother said she had dropped Jayden and his older brother off at the baby sitter's at 4 p.m. Monday. She said that at 9 p.m. she received a call from the baby sitter, saying that something was wrong with Jayden and she needed to come to her house immediately.

According to Jayden's mother, the baby sitter said Jayden was crawling out of a playpen when her boyfriend walked into the apartment and startled Jayden. She said Jayden fell from the playpen and hit his head.
