COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Thousands of athletes and coaches calling Columbia home for the weekend all thanks to the Special Olympics South Carolina.

The opening ceremony taking place at Fort Jackson’s Solomon Center Friday night. Events throughout the weekend were held at Richland Northeast High, AllStar Gymnastics and Fort Jackson.

According to Special Olympics South Carolina website their mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. 

Events from the weekend included: gymnastics, aquatics, softball, and cheerleading just to name a few.
