COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina Senate panel has approved legislation that would trump federal energy standards by allowing manufacturers to make and sell traditional incandescent bulbs.
The Senate panel unanimously approved with a voice vote on Wednesday a House bill that would allow the bulbs derided as energy hogs to be made in South Carolina for sale only in the Palmetto State.
The Incandescent Light Bulb Freedom Act now moves to the full Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee.
Manufacturers begin phasing out traditional incandescent bulbs next year under a federal energy law that encourages production of more energy efficient compact fluorescent, halogen and LED bulbs.
Proponents of the bill say the more efficient bulbs cost too much and they don't like the light they provide.
