EUTAWVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death of a man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Eutawville.

SLED spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said Tuesday state police are involved at the request of the town and Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.

Authorities have released few details about the shooting. The Orangeburg County coroner's office says 54-year-old Bernard Bailey died Monday morning from several gunshot wounds.

The Eutawville Police Department is a one-person force with only a police chief. Mayor Jean Akers said Chief Robert Combs had been placed on leave after the shooting, and Orangeburg deputies were providing security for the town.

Combs took office following the resignation of the former chief in February. Timmons says the officer was treated at an area hospital and released.
