COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina will continue to use three drugs to execute an inmate scheduled to die this week.
Corrections Department spokesman John Barkley said Tuesday executioners will use pentobarbital instead of sodium thiopental after the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration seized the state's supply of the drug because of concerns that officials in several states broke the law by buying doses from England.
Other states have made similar changes in their execution procedures.
Jeffrey Motts has dropped his appeals and asked to die Friday. The 35-year-old inmate killed his cellmate at Perry Correctional Institution in 2005, then dragged the man's body into a common area and warned other prisoners that this is what happened to snitches.
Motts' execution would be South Carolina's first in nearly two years.
