HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- A federal judge has dismissed some claims in a federal lawsuit challenging traffic cameras on Interstate 95 in the town of Ridgeland.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports U.S. District Judge Sol Blatt Jr. has dismissed as plaintiffs those motorists who had tickets dismissed by the town and those who already paid their fines.
Town attorney Timothy Domin says Blatt concluded paying the fines amounted to a guilty plea.
The lawsuit filed last year claims that nabbing speeders with cameras and then mailing tickets is unconstitutional. Those who have not paid tickets have been given time to file an amended complaint.
The town says the speed cameras have slowed motorists and saved lives on the interstate about 20 miles north of the Georgia-South Carolina state line.
