GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A 29-year-old man has died after he fell 125 feet from a water fall in northern Greenville County while trying to save his dog.

The dog regained its footing and survived.

Greenville County Deputy Coroner Kent Dill says David A. Lewis of Greenville was hiking with his girlfriend and his dog at Heritage Falls on Saturday afternoon when he tried to stop the dog from falling from a ledge at the falls.

Dill says the man's girlfriend suffered some bruises as she went down to try to help the victim. Her name was not released.

Dill says an autopsy was planned Monday.

Lewis was a landscape architect in Pickens.
