CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn is optimistic that long-sought money to study deepening Charleston Harbor will be included when the Army Corps of Engineers releases its work plan later this month.

Clyburn spokeswoman Hope Derrick said Monday that Clyburn understands money for several port projects, including Charleston, will be in the plan being released now that the new federal budget finally passed.

Clyburn has been working with the White House to make sure money for Charleston is included. Other South Carolina lawmakers also have been working to get the money.

Corps spokesman Gene Pawlick in Washington says the work plan is still being put together and couldn't comment.

The study is the first step toward ensuring the port can handle bigger ships that will come through the Panama Canal.
