COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Governor Nikki Haley announced a new program to promote student financial literacy Wednesday at West Columbia’s Airport High School. The governor was joined by representatives from BB&T, EverFi, and the South Carolina Bankers Association to talk about the EverFi program. The computer program teaches high school students about credit scores, paying for college, credit cards, and other lessons in finance.
Private money paid for the program so students can access it for free.
Governor Haley called it an innovative solution in a tough budget year.
“We understand that during this financial situation that we've all gone through we owe it to our students to make sure they know everything they need to know on how to manage their financial life and how to do a checkbook and how to know what a credit card those are things those are life skills that will last you can't put a price on that,” she said.
Haley said they will be sending out letters to Superintendents to let them know about the new option.
State schools chief Mick Zais says he supports strengthening the instruction but does not endorse a specific program.
