COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Just in time for Earth Day a Midlands artist is using stuff most of us throw out to create masterpieces.

Kirkland Smith says she sifts through bags of trash and uses old action figures, plastic tops and discarded toys to create portraits.

Her latest creation is a picture of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, but she didn't use a lot of toys in that one.

"I wanted to be a little more sophisticated so I used more computer parts and cell phones and things like that, but there are a few toys in there too.  I couldn't get around it," Smith explains.

Smith also says people have approached her about doing a portrait of them with toys and other recyclables.
