COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Tea party activists and conservative policy groups are calling for more detailed disclosure in the state's economic development deals in the midst of questions about a sales tax collection break for online retailer Amazon.com.
State Sen. Tom Davis Wednesday introduced a bill requiring greater disclosure to show how much economic incentives are costing taxpayers and other businesses.
The Senate Finance Committee sent a bill to the floor for debate Tuesday that will let Amazon avoid collecting sales taxes from South Carolina customers. The company said it would back out of plans to build a 1,249-job distribution facility that's being built in Lexington County.
Davis said the bill doesn't target Amazon but addresses a growing concern about the state subsidizing business. He plans to amend the Amazon bill with his proposal.
