Missing hiker from Florence found alive in NC

BAT CAVE, N.C. (WHNS, WACH) -- A missing hiker was found alive in the mountains of North Carolina on Thursday morning, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office.

According to Lt. Randy Sorrells of the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office said 28-year-old Kristy Thornbrew, of Florence, S.C., and some friends were staying at a cabin on nearby Shumont Road over the weekend. He said that Monday morning, Thornbrew said she was going to hike up to Pinnacle Peak to watch the sunrise. He said she called her friends at 9:11 a.m. and told them she was hiking back down to the cabin. He said authorities were called about 1 p.m. after friends tried to search for her.

Sorrells said that someone flying a helicopter over the area spotted a person and alerted authorities. He said that they have made voice contact with the person and have confirmed it is Thornbrew.
