COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Senate budget writers hope to wrap up work on a $5.3 billion general fund spending plan.

Senate Finance Committee members will meet Thursday and hope to begin working through detailed agency spending figures.

Chairman Hugh Leatherman hopes to have the budget work wrapped up before Friday and expects the Senate to begin debating the budget in two weeks.

Budget writers on Wednesday discussed dozens of temporary law changes. That included turning back an effort to require generic drugs for HIV/AIDS and mental patients on Medicaid.
