COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles announced the upcoming Amnesty Week for drivers with certain license suspensions Wednesday

Amnesty Week will be held May 16-20, 2011 in 17 DMV offices across the state to help reduce or clear the remaining time for driver's suspension.

"We expect a large turnout statewide during Amnesty Week," said DMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo.  "Customers who think they may qualify for amnesty should start getting ready now.  The earlier you take care of the requirements, the better off you are."

During Amnesty Week, South Carolina drivers who have lost their driving privileges for suspensions included in the program may be able to reduce or clear the remaining time of their suspension.  The program will assist the following types of suspended drivers:

- Drivers under 18 years of age that are suspended for excessive points
- Those suspended for operating an unlicensed taxi or vehicle
- Drivers suspended for operating an uninsured vehicle that they did not own
- Those suspended for driving under suspension, excluding alcohol or drug related convictions

Find out more about Amnesty Week by visiting the SCDMV website.
