MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's tourism director says he wants to get heads in beds in Myrtle Beach, the heart of the state's $18 billion tourism industry.
Tuesday's visit was the first to the area by Duane Parrish since he became head of the Department of Parks Recreation and Tourism earlier this year.
Parrish talked to tourism leaders about advertising, welcome centers and promoting the golf industry. Parrish said the visit was to learn about the area's tourism industry and see how his agency can help.
Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes told Parrish the area's local penny sales tax for tourism alone should be left in place. The money is used to promote tourism but Gov. Nikki Haley has criticized its use.
