COLUMBIA (AP) -- South Carolina's newest teachers would have to wait three years to get regular teaching contracts and job security under legislation a House panel is considering.
The House Education and Public Works Committee Tuesday plans to discuss a measure that would require teachers to remain on induction contracts for two years longer than the current agreement.
Palmetto State Teachers Association executive director Kathy Maness says the change cuts job security.
Teachers working under induction contracts can be fired at will and have no grievance rights. The legislation originally called for the teachers to wait five years to get the rights other teachers have under annual contracts.
Maness hopes school districts will spread the requirements for new teachers that now have to be met in one year over three years.
