MOUNT PLEASANT (WCIV) -- Some 300 re-enactors are camped out at Patriots Point in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Sunday morning began with a period church service, followed by artillery drills and cannon firing.

"It's one of the defining events of our nation's history," said senior curator David Clark. "It won't be anything like this again, for another 50 years."

Re-enactors took on the full experience of the Civil War, with period clothing, an authentic campsite and weapons.

"We're camping here just like they did," said re-enactor Vernon Terry. "We're eating off fires just like they did. Cooking in cast iron skillets and pans and pots."

Re-enactors will be at Patriots Point until Thursday, April 14th and at Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie and Liberty Square through the 17th.

"It's a part of being an American," said re-enactment spectator Jane Gibson. "If you don't know where you've come from and how it happened, how can you go forward?"
