COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Feed The Children delivered two semi tractor-trailers full of food and essentials to the Columbia Housing Authority on Friday.
The distribution was part of Feed the Children’s Americans Feeding Americans Caravan, which has helped more than 230,000 families across the country since it began in 2009.
Feed The Children partner agency, Columbia Housing Authority pre-identified 800 families to receive the goods. Each family received a 25-pound box of non-perishable food items, a 10-pound box of personal care items, and a box of Avon products. The boxes were designed to help a family for up to one week.
Marion Knapper was one of the recipients.
"I ain't got no food to eat I need the food to eat," he explained.
Donna Gilbert with the Housing Authority said, "it is a wonderful thing to be able to help...people are just so thankful and everything you give them they really appreciate it."
One in four Columbia children are considered impoverished. To put it in perspective, the number of impoverished children living in South Carolina (237,741) could fill Williams-Brice Stadium nearly three times.
Volunteers from organizations across the City and County, such as, Allen University Students, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Benedict College Students, Central Baptist Church, Columbia Housing Authority Employees, and the Columbia Police Department, helped distribute the goods on the 8th.
