COLUMBIA (WACH)--Vision Airlines began flying out of Columbia Metropolitan Airport today for cheaper rates than some of the competition.
Anyone who booked a Vision Airlines flight by midnight recieved a $19 one-way fare between Columbia and Destin/Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.
Spokesman Bill Maloney says that's only the beginning, "We want to really build a relationship with the community, by providing more of an alternative and hopefully add more leisure destinations, says Maloney "by kind of getting deep into the community as oppose to some of the other carriers who just come in and out."
Vision Airlines is expected to play a major role in revitalizing Florida's Emerald Coast tourism industry as the economy was crippled by last year's Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Also known as the Emerald Coast, the Destin/Ft. Walton Beach area is among America’s top-10 spring break vacation destinations. Vision Airlines also offers service to the Orlando/Sanford International Airport from multiple cities.
Airport Director Dan Mann says thousands of South Carolinians make the eight hour drive to Florida's panhandle, which is part of the reason Columbia was selected as a new place of operation.
