NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey is seeking a sixth term as mayor of South Carolina's third largest city.

Summey plans to make the official announcement Friday at a news conference in his City Hall office. He was first elected mayor in 1994.

Summey is only the third mayor in the history of North Charleston. The city was incorporated back in 1972 and now has nearly 97,500 residents.

Summey says April Fools' Day may seem a strange time to announce his re-election bid. But he says that was the birthday of Miner Crosby, his father-in-law who introduced him to politics and public service.

The North Charleston municipal election is Nov. 8.
