COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Scott Overstreet and his buddies are getting ready for a golf tournament this weekend.

But it isn't your typical golf game.

"It's like regular golf but instead of hitting a ball with a club we throw frisbees or discs," says Scott Overstreet.

Overstreet is the President of the Columbia Disk Golf Club.

They’re holding a tournament called "Throwing for Tomorrow" Saturday at Earlewood Park starting at 10am.

The group is hosting the game to raise money for the Dickerson Center for Children.

"With the economy it’s just almost been devastating. We've lost programs, we have had to turn away children," says Carol Yarborough.

DCC’s mission is to provide a healing environment for children who may have been sexually and/or physically abused.

Yarborough says due to statewide budget cuts the center has lost funding.

"We see around four hundred children every year. We perform about one hundred and twenty five medical exams through our pediatricians. We do about three hundred forensic interviews and we see over one hundred children for counseling," says Yarborough.

The Disk Golf Club held a tournament last year and raised three thousand dollars for DCC.

They're hoping for more money this weekend.

Yarborough says all monies go directly to serve children who may have been assaulted.

"We do that through a pediatrician who specializes in child abuse and we do it through trained forensic interviews,” says Yarborough.

Yarbourough says some of the cases are so tragic she hopes the center doesn't have to turn anyone else away.

They help treat children as young as three up to eighteen.
