COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Relief from the heavy pollen may be on the way to South Carolina.  A cold front tonight, and a disturbance that will move in this weekend could provide much needed rainfall to help give the atmosphere a “bath.”

The cold front tonight will provide better chances for rain in the Upstate.  The airmass in the Midlands looks like it’ll be to dry to support the scattered showers and thunderstorms holding together.

This weekend is a different story.   A disturbance will move into the area bringing better chances for rain with it.  Thanks to little to no movement during the weekend, and for the start of next week, rain chances will increase each day through Tuesday evening.

Rain provides the best, natural relief for allergies because it serves at a “shower” for the atmosphere.  When there’s a stagnant weather pattern all the pollen particles build in the air, eventually becoming heavy enough to form the yellow, dusty layer on surfaces.  Prime time for this in South Carolina is mid March through the end of April.
