COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Potential president candidates have primed South Carolina's political money machine with more than $214,000 in the past year, but former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty may be the first to chip in bus fare.
Pawlenty met Wednesday with Gov. Nikki Haley at the Statehouse. He was walking around the Capitol with a reporter and taking in a monument to African-American history when a man near tears wearing a ball cap approached. He told the well-dressed stranger that he had shredded his ATM card and needed bus fare.
Pawlenty turned to his aide and out came Pawlenty's wallet and a couple of worn dollar bills.
The grateful man went on to a bus stop. Pawlenty headed back to his hotel.
