CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The effort by a Charleston historian to save slave cabins around the South is entering a second year.
Program officer Joseph McGill with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, spends the night in a sleeping bag in a cabin at Middleton Place along the Ashley River on Saturday.
McGill has been sleeping in slave cabins around the South to draw attention to efforts to preserve them. Last year, he slept in cabins in South Carolina and Alabama.
This year, he takes his experience to North Carolina, Maryland, Louisiana, Texas and Missouri.
McGill's work seems to be having an effect. As a result of his efforts, at least three property owners now plan to save old slave cabins on their land.
