RICHLAND COUNTY (WACH) -- A northeast Richland County school evacuated students Wednesday morning because of a gas leak in the area.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says the break happened near Ridge View High School on the 4800 block of Hardscrabble Road.  SCE&G officials say a 1'1/8" inch gas main break was the culprit.

Students were moved from one building along with portable classrooms to other parts of the school that have been deemed safe according to officials.  Classes continued as scheduled.

SCE&G has secured the area and crews continue their work..  Several blocks surrounding the leak were blocked off to traffic.
