ASHEBORO, N.C. (AP) -- There's gold in them Carolinas.
At least, that's what several companies hope as they search for gold in North Carolina and South Carolina.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday a number of companies are leasing minerals rights to thousands of acres in the Piedmont.
Tim Daniels with Erin Ventures of Canada says he knows eight companies are looking in South Carolina and are likely to be looking in North Carolina, as well. Daniels' company is looking in both states. Erin Ventures has purchased mining rights to about 2,000 acres in South Carolina and 1,000 acres in Moore County, about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh.
Revolution Resources of Canada is searching old mines north of Asheboro.
Gold prices set a record of $1,441 per ounce this week.
