WEST COLUMBIA (WACH) - The website is called crimereports.com. It's linked to the City of West Columbia's website to provide you with up-to-date crime data.
Whether it's a traffic violation or a homicide, you can learn about where and when it happened in West Columbia, thanks to the new software.
"We get lots of calls from people moving into an area wanting to know exactly what's going on in a particular part of town, in a particular neighborhood, and we want to give them accurate information," says West Columbia Police Major Jackie Brothers.
"We have homeowners and crimewatch groups that want the same information so we want to make it as transparent as possible."
Users can pinpoint exactly where and when a crime happened in the city.
"They can go in and filter out what they're not interested in. If they just want to know, are there burglaries in this neighborhood, they can click on that type of crime, and that's all it will show them."
Brothers adds, you can make the program work for you, even if you're not connected to your computer all of the time.
"There's a feature on the software where you can go in and send alerts to yourself, so that if there's a crime in your neighborhood, you can pick to have it sent to you daily, weekly or monthly."
