COLUMBIA (WACH) -- South Carolina state Democratic lawmakers bashed the Republicans’ stance on federally mandated health care for everyone Wednesday afternoon at the State House. They went so far as to call them hypocrites.
Members of the Senate Democratic Caucus say if Governor Nikki Haley, state Attorney General Alan Wilson and the rest of the Republican delegation want the state to opt out of the federal health care law, they should lead by example and give up their state subsidized health care coverage.
“If you want all of the citizens of South Carolina to be opting out, you ought to take the first step and opt out and go down to the local insurance office and pay for it yourself,” said Senator Brad Hutto of Orangeburg.
The Democratic lawmakers say the federal health care law isn't perfect, but it is a step in the right direction.
Wilson's office tells WACH Fox News the Attorney General is not on the state's health care plan, but instead covered under the military's Tricare insurance.
