COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A departure ceremony is set for a South Carolina National Guard maintenance company that is going to Afghanistan for a year.
A departure ceremony was scheduled Friday morning for about 120 soldiers of the 742nd Support Maintenance Company. The troops leave Sunday for Fort Hood, Texas, for a month of training before heading overseas.
The company is based at McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Eastover.
The soldiers perform maintenance on vehicles, small arms and electronics equipment.
Last week, 100 soldiers of the guard's 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade in Spartanburg left for Fort Lewis in Washington for three weeks of training before departing for Afghanistan. They operate, maintain and expand the communications network for U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
