SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- State senators have confirmed a replacement for U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy as chief prosecutor for Spartanburg and Cherokee counties.
The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports that the Senate on Thursday voted unanimously to confirm veteran prosecutor Barry Barnette to lead the Seventh Circuit Solicitor's Office.
Gowdy was elected to Congress in November. Barnette served as Gowdy's deputy and was named acting solicitor Dec. 31. He will serve the remainder of Gowdy's term, which runs through January 2013.
Barnette is a graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law and Marshall University. In 2006, he earned the Ernest F. Hollings Award for Excellence in state prosecution, South Carolina's top honor for prosecution work.
