Is the free time I've gained really a gain?

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The third day proved to be a charm when it came to breaking my cell phone addiction.  Now I'm not going as far as saying I like it, but I'm getting used to it.

Not only has this experiment freed my other hand but has freed some extra time in my schedule.  This morning I found myself ready for work almost 45 minutes early because I didn't play on my phone for that long before I even got out of bed.  My dog got a longer walk, I made myself a nice breakfast and got to sit down and watch the news, which is something I never have time for in my a.m. schedule.

Watching the news is almost something that I need to do to stay informed now that I've given my phone up for a week.  I feel out of the loop, not only socially, but when it comes to the day's hot topics and political happenings.  I'm used to getting the headlines pushed directly to me the instant they're published.  Now I have to wait to get my information in the free time that I have.  Luckily there is more of that time now, but it's not at my convenience.  It also doesn't allow me to multi-task.  So I'm not sure, at this point, if the increased free time is actually a good trade-off since I use that time to do the things I'd normally be doing on-the-go.

I guess the biggest thing I'm still struggling with is not being able to send a quick message or call someone up right away.  It's a luxury we've had for so long that it's a challenge to live without it.  It'd be like asking an accountant to use an abacus after using a calculator their entire career.

Honestly, I don't even think I could go back to a flip phone or any phone without a full keyboard on a permanent basis.  Could you?  Tell me in the comment section below.

Don't forget to check back tomorrow when talk about the use of land lines versus cell phones.  And follow me on Twitter @chrisabbotts for even more on this crazy experiment.
